Internet Influence.
The internet influences citizen participation around the world. For example, when the people of Egypt were planning on rebelling against Mubarak, they organized every single strike and meeting viz Facebook or Twitter. If it weren't for the internet, Mubarak would still be in power to this very day. The citizens of Egypt could not have organized any of stuff they did if it weren't for the interenet. The internet also made it possible for the people to post videos of the horrific acts committed by the government and Mubarak's men. These videos help show the world how horrible Mubarak was which inspires other countries to help Egypt with their time in need. The internet doesn't influence people to act just in Egypt but it happens all over the world because almost everybody in the world uses the internet and it's a very quick, convenient way to communicate and keep people updated.
Even Jerry Brown's opponent wants him to win.
This political add is the single best advertisement in my opinion. I think it's very effective for many reasons. First of all, it shows Meg Whitman (Jerry Brown's opponent) addmitting that Jerry Brown himself made a great governer for the state of California. Not only does Meg Whitman point out how good of a job Jerry Brown did 30 years ago but she said that "Anything was possible back then" and acted as if California was in it's best shape ever...under the control of Jerry Brown. Another reason why I think this ad is so great is because Jerry Brown doesn't go out of his way to put Meg down or bring him up. When political candidates advertise by putting their opponent down, it makes them look desperate for votes in my opinion where as Jerry Brown simply stated a fact and let Meg do the rest. When Meg Whitman said that on live television she was pretty much digging her own grave.
E-commerce Taxation.
There are many issues regarding electronic commerce in America's society today. Electronic commerce consists of buying or selling products or services over the internet and it's very difficult to figure out how to tax these goods. First of all, when you order a good online it's not always from the same state as you. Say you live in California where the tax is over nine percent and you buy a product or service from Texas where there's no tax what so ever. Do you pay tax or not? If so, how much? Most of the time people would turn to the federal government for help but there simply are no federal taxes. Thus, making this problem very difficult to solve.

Government Censorship
The government censors many things all the time. They mainly censor things that show weaknesses in our country. For instance, you never see American caskets being carried out of a plan or truck. This is because it's demoralizing to the American citizens. Although the public doesn't want to see this it's important that they do so they can realize that this war is affecting us as well. The government also censored many things in the vietnam war such as our soldiers dying, coffins with American flags on them, and the horrible after effects of chemical weapons called Agent Orange. The government pretty much censors all the losses and bad things that happen to America. It mostly takes place during wars or acts of war such as 9/11. The government censors many things on the news and reports to protect the confidence of the people.

One accusation after another.
Republican's are doing everything they can to increase the pressure and struggle that Obama faces on a day-to-day basis. Donald Trump and many other Americans accused President Obama of being a foreigner in a desperate attempt to turn the public against Obama. This caused skepticism throughout the hearts and minds of many Americans. Once the public and press demanded Obama's birth certificate, President Obama thought nothing of it since it was a very inaccurate accusation. He then realized that many Americans weren't as smart as he thought they were and they were beginning to actually believe that Obama was born in another country. He then proved everyone wrong by showing them his birth certificate but they obviously don't buy it and say that the hospital is a faulty hospital. It's honestly completely ridiculous how desperate people are to bring Obama down and it's scary how out of their way they're willing to go in order for this to happen. What's truly ridiculous though is how people can actually fall for these false accusations and how truly idiotic some Americans are. These multiple false accusations have turned many people against Obama and that's exactly what they were intended to do.

Obama the Foreigner?
Lately, President Obama has been accused of being a foreigner multiple times. Donald Trump has been all over this trying to convince the public that Obama was born in another country. Donald Trump's accusations have turned many Americans against Obama and have made many more Americans skeptical about President Obama's legitimacy. It’s amazing how such a ridiculously inaccurate accusation can make the president’s job even more stressful. Any educated individual wouldn’t even consider to begin believing this rumor until there was proof but it seems that most Americans believe he is a foreigner and will continue to have that mentality until proven otherwise which is why Donald Trump made the accusation out of no where. He knew it’d turn the public against Obama and put him in a tough position. Although President Obama has to deal with a very tough situation, he’s been playing it off very well. It’s amazing how the public can be convinced to believe almost anything that is said on the news.

United States vs. Nixon
During President Nixon's 1974 reelection campaign, Nixon hired people to break into the white house and rig the election so Nixon would win. Once he was caught, the case was brought to court. When the prosecutor, Leon Jaworski, demanded Nixon bring the tapes to court, he refused. Eventually, the court got hold of the tapes and revealed them but 14 minutes were missing from the tape. Nixon was eventually found guilty. I personally think that any president who does that should immediately be put in prison and should never be allowed to run for any political spot. Having a president who is willing to cheat just to get re-elected is embarrassing. The President of the United States should be a lot more honest and confident than that.

Roe vs. Wade
In Texas, abortion was completely illigal unless the mother's life is endangered and the abortion can help save her life. There are many problems with this law. Even if the mother is raped and impregnated, she cannot get an abortion. Even if the mother is poor and struggling to feed even herself, she cannot get an abortion. Although having the child at the time may not put the mother's life at risk but if the mother has no money, then that is putting the mother's life as well as the child's life at risk due to the lack of money, shelter, clothing, and food. I think women should have every right to get an abortion, it's their decision on whether they want to keep their child and nobody should be able to tell them what to do because they wont have to deal with nearly as much as the mother will whether it's child labor or taking care of the child. Every woman should have the right to get an abortion.

Community Service Paper

My Community Service Experience
Over 50 million Americans are forced to live with poverty or some sort of struggle to get food; this equals out to be roughly 1 out of 6 Americans are living in poverty or struggle to get food (3). Poverty is spreading throughout the United States as well as all around the world; studies show that half of all Americans will live in poverty at one point in their lives before they turn 65 years old (3). In 2004, 120 Americans died from starvation and the average infant death rate caused by starvation is about 200 every year (2). Poverty is becoming a huge problem for many families and individuals in the United States . There are many easy ways to help out our less fortunate fellow Americans with their struggles, such as donating food or volunteering at a food bank or a food drive like Erma Bombeck said, “Volunteers are the only human beings on the face of the earth who reflect this nation’s compassion, unselfish caring, patience, and just plain love for one another.” (8).
(Part 1) There are nearly 3.5 million homeless people living in America (37,000 in New York Alone) each year but the numbers are constantly climbing due to the combination of our falling economy and loss of jobs (4). About 90 percent of homeless people in American are found in urban areas. Over 50 million Americans struggle to get food to feed themselves and their family on a day-to-day basis; this is where the food banks come into play. “A food bank is a non-profit, charitable organization that distributes mostly donated food to a wide variety of agencies that in turn feed the hungry.” (5) How do these food banks get all their food? All of it is donated either from growers, manufacturers, distributers, and retailers who are over-stocked and can’t sell all their products or even from warm-hearted individuals but the process isn’t even close to being over (5). Once the food is donated, the food bank must sort out all of the good and bad stuff because believe it or not, some people donate contaminated goods such as rusted cans or moldy vegetables. This is where the volunteers come into the picture, the food bank takes volunteers to help sort out the food so they can distribute it to soup kitchens, schools, homeless shelters, orphanages, etc. I decided to help sort out food because I felt it could help out a lot of people in need which would feel very rewarding once I was finished. I decided to volunteer at the Oakland Food Bank but there many other food banks to choose from in the area such as the Contra Costa County Food Bank, San Francisco Food Bank, Alameda County Community Food Bank, and many others a little ways out there (6). I’ve volunteered at the Oakland Food Bank, the San Francisco Food Bank, as well as the Contra Costa Food Bank throughout my life. I did my hours at the Oakland Food Bank because the Contra Costa Food Bank was full. Believe it or not, the Food Banks are constantly filled with volunteers, filled to the point where they do not have enough food to be sorted by the mass amount of volunteers so I was forced to volunteer at the food bank in Oakland . If you decide you want to volunteer at a local food bank but it’s full, there’s always a handful of other food banks to choose from. With the amount of homeless people living in the area (mostly Berkeley , San Francisco , and Oakland ), volunteering at a local food bank can and will help out your community in many different aspects.
(Part 2) Poverty and hunger are becoming huge problems in America ’s Society today. In fact, it’s becoming such a huge problem that the government has decided to act and try to prevent people from starving. One of the methods the United States Government uses is the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP); also known as food stamps. This program is run by the Federal Government, the government distributes color coded cards to low-income/no-income families who need to eat. There are three different types of cards; Brown, Blue, and Green. The brown one’s are worth one dollar, the blue ones are worth five dollars, and the green ones are worth ten dollars. You can buy any pre-packaged food product from almost any store in America . This program helps over 20,000 Americans with one in eight adults using this program and one in four children benefiting from this. The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program distributes an average of $133.12 per person on a monthly average (7). While the Federal government takes care of the national food stamp policy, the state governments help out with the local food banks in their state meaning the entire government is trying to help out those who struggle to survive.
(Part 3) While there are many things that are being done to help feed the country, there are still many things that need to be done. The country as a whole is putting in a great amount of effort to fix this huge problem but with the economy falling into pieces and with the jobless rates soaring, we’re going to need to do a lot more than what we’re already doing. Although there are multiple food banks in most areas, we need to either create more or donate more food. This is because the food banks always have a ton of people willing to help out yet they don’t accept them due to the small amount of space they have and lack of donations to sort. The government has been helping but they need to set their foot down and actually make a huge impact whether it be growing government food or donating food to the needy. People need to donate more often, most donations are donated around Thanksgiving, Christmas, or other holidays but people need to remember that these families aren’t just hungry on these holidays; they’re in need of food everyday of their lives. From my experience of volunteering at my local food bank, I learned many things. One thing I learned was how fortunate I am to have food everyday because I discovered how many families are in need and how desperate they are to just eat some food. I also learned how easy and rewarding it was to truly help out people in need. I found it interesting how at the end of each day, the supervisor would weight out all the food and then calculate that into how many meals we sorted and how long it could support a family for. This was amazing because it really gives me an idea of how big of an impact I’ve made, the feeling really makes me want to come back and help out again. As said by Margaret Mead, “Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it’s the only thing that ever has.” (8). While you don’t get paid in money to volunteer at the food bank, the feeling you get once you’ve realized you helped these desperate families live another day is more rewarding than any payment they could give you and like Mohammed Ali said, “ Service to others is the payment you make for your space here on earth.” (8).
Many people help get food to feed the hungry and homeless in many ways whether it’s by volunteering at a local food bank or just donating canned food or other pre-packaged products. The government helps a lot as well; however, with the United States ’ economy dwindling down and people constantly losing their jobs, the poverty rate in America will only grow and get worse. It’s only a matter of time before the entire population is jobless and starving which is why we must do something to put an end to poverty in America . Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. said, “Everyone can be great because anyone can serve. You don’t have to have a college degree to serve. You don’t even have to make your subject and your verb agree to serve…you only need a heart full of grace (and) a soul generated by love.” (8). This quote inspired me to volunteer and help out people who are less fortunate than me. I felt that volunteering at the Oakland food bank was the best use of my time to benefit my community as well as my country. It felt good to help out many families in need and it was also rewarding to know that I was a big part in helping feed the hungry. I met a lot of great people at the food bank and had a great time working there. This experience has made me realize how fortunate I am to have all these opportunities and privileges in my life. Now I am able to look at things from different perspectives and appreciate what I have much more. Volunteering at the food bank was a wonderful experience and I’d love to volunteer there more consistently to help get rid of poverty in the United States .

Animal Shelter Donations
There are many animal shelters that need as much help as they can get due to the high amount of animals being housed there. Due to the fact that there are countless homeless dogs, the largest and most important demand for these shelters are food to provide for the animals. They often have food drives for the pets but not many people know about them. It’s always a huge help and much appreciated if people donate any amount of food whether it be a tiny can or a huge bag, any amount helps out a lot. You can also help out by donating other items such as treats, blankets, beds, towels, toys, anything a dog can use. It’s very easy to set up supply or food drives in your community as well. Once you gather all the supplies, a driver will come pick up the goods from you. There are many different ways you can help out your local animal shelter.
Saving a Dog's Life is Literally a Walk in the Park.
Every year, thousands of dogs and other domestic animals are treated very poorly and can often result in death. Some animals are trained to fight to the death, some are beaten, some are never fed, and some are just simply abandoned on the side of the road. It’s the animal shelter’s job to find and rescue these poor animals but what happens once these dogs and animals are rescued? They’re kept in a shelter kept inside small cages, crammed up which can cause health issues or behavior problems which can affect the chance of life or adoption. In order to prevent this, the shelter needs volunteers to walk a few of their dogs for them. Due to the over crowded shelter, there are just simply too many dogs and too little workers to get the whole job done. You can volunteer at your local animal shelter and help provide daily exercise, affection, and socialization for a homeless puppy who desperately needs help in order to survive. It’s amazing how saving a dog’s life can be so simple and effortless.
Lindsay Wildlife Museum Volunteer Service
The Lindasy Wildlife Museum has tons of different species that live inside the exhibit and sometimes it's too much work for all the employees. This forces them to rely on the 500+ volunteers that volunteer each year, For my senior community service project, I decided I wanted to volunteer somewhere I actually took passion in and would enjoy doing. At first, it was hard to think of a place but then my friend told me about the Lindsay Wildlife Museum . As soon as I heard about this, I instantly knew that’s what I want to do. Ever since I was a kid, I’ve loved animals but could never own any because my mother is allergic to almost any animal you can think of besides fish. I figured, while I was helping out with the animals I would also be helping teach families and children about the animals and helping promote the beauty of wild life and all the different species that may live there. I hope I get to work with some of the animals but if not, I’ll still feel accomplished to know that I helped the Wildlife Museum as a whole.
Rebuilding Relations with Japan
As we all know, about a week ago Japan was hit with an enormous earthquake followed by a 30 foot tsunami. Ever since Japan has been struggling from this unfortunate natural disaster, the United States has begun what it calls Operation Tomodachi (Friend in Japanese), one of its largest relief effort in years. This operation consists of the U.S. Military and Navy constantly dropping off supplies such as food, water, and clothes to survivors on a school in a ruined Japanese village. At first, the survivors “looked hesitantly from the windows” but soon realized what was going on and rushed out to help unload all the supplies. All the survivors were very grateful and some embraced the Americans. One 37-year old secretary named Junko Fujiwara said, “They are like gods descending from the sky.” At this point in time, approximately 20 American ships have been sent off as well as the Ronald Reagan(“a nuclear-powered carrier whose helicopters are busily ferrying supplies to survivors”)to Japan’s northeastern coast and will continue to help Japan during its struggle until the country can get back on its feet.

Space Shuttle Discovery Completes Its Final Flight.
Chris Brown Serves 1,400 Hours of Community Service
Due to the horrible assault of Chris Brown on Rihanna, Chris is forced to do community service in the state of Virginia . On Wednesday, September 19th, 2009, Brown was spotted cleaning the grounds of a Virginia police horse stable after tweeting "On my way to community service." in the morning before he left. While he was working, he was seen wearing a neon orange reflective vest as well as a red baseball cap. This is a small part of his six-month community labor sentence along with graffiti removal, washing cars, and cleaning/maintaining other grounds. His entire six-month community labor sentence will amount to over 1,400 hours total of community service. On top of his community labor sentence, he will serve a five-year probation sentence, attend domestic classes for a year, pay fines, and is forbidden from contacting Rihanna for the next five years. If he fails to do so, it will result in his arrest and possible downfall of his entire carreer.
Food Banks
There are thousands of food banks all over the world on six continents that are distributing literal tons of food to thousands of non-profit community or government agencies such as food pantries, soup kitchens, homeless shelters, orphanages, schools, etc. Food banks are typically located in cities “which run a centralized warehouse.” How do these food banks donate all this food free of charge? People from all over the place donate food they don’t need, canned goods, vegetables, anything you can imagine. They even get a lot of donations from growers, manufacturers, distributors, and retailers. Each food bank has multiple donation places set up and then they go around and collect the donations. After this, they sort all the donated food and distribute the food to the needy. Almost all the workers at the food banks are volunteers as well so the entire operation is non-profit; they do all this hard work for free in order to help feed the hungry. You too can help feed the needy by volunteering at your local food bank. You’d be surprised how easy and rewarding the work is; even an hour or two helps out a lot.

Space Shuttles Retire
NASA has officially announced that their space shuttle Discovery, as well as it’s brother and sister the Endeavour and the Atlantis, are retiring. What will NASA do with these old giant space shuttles? They could sell them but who would want a 27 years old, dinged up space shuttle with 150 million miles under its belt? Museums. There is a burning desire for museums all over the country. It would cost approximately $28.8 million just for “dealer preparation and destination charges” yet many museums can’t wait to get their hands on these three shuttles. The Discovery is expected to return from orbit on Wednesday, March 8th completing its 39th flight in its career with one last scheduled flight to it’s final destination making it its 40th flight. It is unknown where these space shuttles will end up but NASA will announce these locations on April 12th, the 30th anniversary of the first space shuttle launching.

Democrats for Same Sex Marriage
In 1996, an act called the Defense of Marriage Act was passed in the United States of America. Thus, illegalizing the marriage of two person of the same gender. Ever since, there has been a movement to help re-gain equal rights for everyone in which the Democrats support and the Republicans oppose. Most Democrats support same-sex marriage such as Obama. Republicans on the other hand are foaming at the mouth over same-sex marriage. One Republican in particular named Mark Foley is extremely against same-sex marriage. It turns out, he was caught sending inappropriate instant messages and e-mails to under-aged boys and is homosexual himself. One of the messages he sent said “Measure it with a ruler.” I personally believe that same-sex marriage should be legal. Personally, I’m not a homosexual but I strongly believe that every human being has every right to marry whomever they want whether it is man or woman, love is love. Who is the government to say who you can and cannot love? Whether or not a man marries a man or a man marries a woman it doesn’t affect anybody else in any way, shape or form so why should it matter? If anything it’ll slow down the population growth. I firmly believe that same-sex marriage should be legal because it’s wrong to tell someone who they can and cannot marry. If I man can marry a woman, a man should be able to marry a man and a woman should be able to marry a woman. I obviously take the Democrat’s side on this topic. I think the only reason the Republicans oppose same-sex marriage is because they don’t want the public to know they’re gay since a handful of foaming at the mouth anti same-sex marriage Republicans have been caught red-handed in homosexual activities.

The Republicans
The Republican Party, also known as the Grand Old Party (GOP), was founded by anti-slavery expansion activists in 1854. The Republican Party had the 2nd most registered voters in 2004 with a total of 55 million voters compared to the 72 million Democratic voters. While the Republicans hold a majority of the seats in the House of Representatives, they hold a minority in the U.S. Senate. This party leans more to the center-right in the U.S Political Spectrum. Some of the previous Republican Presidents were Ronald Reagan, who increased the U.S. National Debt and dug a deeper for hole for Americans to get out of. President George W. Bush was another former Republican President of the United States . He as well dug a very deep hole for America to get out of. We’re currently still trying to get out of the mess he got us Americans into. The War in Afghanistan is officially the longest war to date that the United States has participated in, even longer than the Vietnam War and George W. Bush is to blame. The Republicans are out there to make the rich richer and the poor even more poor than they already are. They’re not out there to make America a better country to live in, they’re out there to put more cash in their pockets.
The Democrats
It is said that the Democratic Party has had "the lengthiest record of continuous operation in the United States " with approximately 72 million registered voters in 2004. While the Democrats have a minority of the seats in the House, they hold a majority of seats in the Senate. This party appeals to the majority of the public due to the fact that it is said that “The party has favored farmers, laborers, labor unions, and religious/ethnic minorities.” Today, it is said that the Democrats are beginning to favor more social freedoms, affirmative action, balanced budget, and free enterprise system. They are also working on a progressive taxation. Thus, boosting the economy but charging more money for every product. Today, the current president is a Democrat name Barrack Obama, being the first African American president and the 15th Democratic President to serve in the White House. The Democrats are mainly out there to help the majority of the public and make America the best possible place to live in.

Pay Whatever You Please
In Salt Lake City, Utah, a 59-year old former acupuncture therapist named Denise Cerreta opened a small organic soup and sandwich shop in 2003 called One World Cafe. The unique part about this shop is the fact that you quite literally pay what you want for the food you want. The Denise says "I ask for donations" but doesn't expect any. If people feel like paying, they can leave a donation in an unlocked box at the front counter. Customers can either walk in and eat or place reservations for 1-hour time slots for each meal of the day. The store is run by volunteers, their work consists of many different things from sewing, cleaning up, or even yard work. Denice said "If the menu had prices, the range would be anywhere from $1 to $8, depending on the plate size." but it's not required. The owner stated, "It's funny that most people at first visualize a homeless person benefiting from the community kitchens. They do, but many people look just like me. Perhaps they are students, newly divorced, single parents, unemployed."
Community Service Booster Bill
While there's not a lot of agreement in Congress concerning President Obama's plans for the budets, a bipartisan group of lawmakers came up with a compromise. In April, 2009 this group of lawmakers encouraged Obama to increase budgets for community service funds. This is said to be "one of the most sweeping overhauls of the country's national service programs since the 1960's." The bill that was passed by the House has dramatically increased the size of Americorps, the government's largest volunteer organization(equivalent of the Peace Corps.)This $5.7 billion legislation has tripled the size of the service program that was originally proposed by President John F. Kennedy. It has increased the number of volunteer opportunities each year from 75,000 to 250,00.

Chris Brown Begins Community Service

Should All High Schools Require Community Service Hours?
Many high schools today require their students to turn in “X” amount of hours depending on what grade the student is in while other high schools require zero hours. Many people believe community service is a great thing and should be required out of each high school student. I believe if a high school requires its students to turn in community service hours, then it will help make the community a better place for everyone. If a high school does not require community service hours, I think it would be a great idea to at least offer benefits from turning in hours such as pizza parties, trip to great America , GPA boost, or anything they have to offer that can and will highly encourage students to participate in helping the community. Although students frown upon community service and hate doing the hours it’s for their own good. It will help better their community and make it better place to live in the future.
Shelter Inc.
My mom told me about this organization one time that is set up for under-privileged
children. It’s pretty much like a day car that feeds them, plays with them, takes them on field trips, and takes great care of them for free. One of their offices is located in Martinez which is where all the office work is done such sorting donations, creating flyers for events, etc. Their other office(the day care center) is located in Concord . I think little children can be fun and funny and I also love helping out underprivileged people so I decided I might as well give it a shot. The first time I went, I volunteered at the day care in Concord . There were many children from ages 2-8. They were all very nice as well as the staff there. I enjoyed helping out and playing with the kids so I decided it would be a good idea to help out Shelter Inc. more so I volunteered again. After a few weeks of switching back and forth between the Martinez office and the Concord office, I had contributed over 30 hours to the organization. I felt very accomplished for helping these children out and plan on serving many more hours at Shelter Inc.
